The Rogue Magazine names 10 "coolest" Filipino athletes of all time
The Rogue Magazine in the Philippines came out with its sports edition issue for the month of April (pictured left is the cover). Instead of asking who is the "greatest" Filipino athlete of all time author Bill Velasco identifies the 10 "coolest" Filipino athletes of all time.

According to Velasco, Filipinos assign different yardsticks for measuring the sportsmen they truly love. "Sometimes the greatest of them do not only leave us in awe-they also strike a chord in our collective consciousness."

The "coolness" criterion says Velasco opens the door to even livelier debate.

Velasco states that all of the athletes he has listed in his article have done what no one before them ever had, and perhaps no other Filipino athlete will be able to duplicate. However, with all due respect to the other nine athletes, Velasco has positioned bowling legend Paeng Nepomuceno (right) on top of his list.

Nepomuceno has won four Bowling World Cups in three decades, owns three Guinness World Records and 122 international titles (so far) as well as numerous awards, citations and recognitions.

Velasco, who calls Nepomuceno the "Adam" in the sport of tenpin bowling, cites a Malaysian national bowler who once said to him: "Paeng is a god in Malaysia. People step aside whenever he comes into the lanes."

Asked why he considers Paeng the "coolest" Filipino athlete of all time, Velasco says "He was a world champion before today's other legends came along, and he will be still a world champion after they have gone… Coolness is timeless."

The great Filipino boxer, Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao, owner of a record-setting 10 world boxing titles in eight different weight divisions, was named No. 2.

Pacquiao is very popular in Arlington, Texas, home of the United States Bowling Congress, (whose international ambassador Paeng is), the International Bowling Campus and the International Training and Research Center, as his last two fights last year have been staged in the Cowboys Stadium, just ten minutes away from the USBC Headquarters and International Bowling Hall of Fame and Museum.

For the records, Paeng was inducted in the International Bowling Hall of Fame eighteen years ago in 1993.
